Montserrat from Barcelona: Train vs Tour – Which Ticket to Buy
We earn a commission if you book through some links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It never decides what we recommend. How we make money
Go by train, and buy Trans Montserrat (€50, checked 22 Oct 2026) only if you will also ride the Sant Joan funicular. If you won't, separate train and rack railway tickets cost about €30 return, and families with children aged 4–13 save on separate tickets because Trans has no child rate. Book a coach tour, such as Easy Montserrat (€56 per adult, checked 23 Oct 2026), if you want the boys' choir built into a weekday plan or don't want to deal with timetables.

Train, combined ticket or coach tour: what are the options?
There are four ways to get to Montserrat from Barcelona. Prices are per adult and were checked on 22 Oct 2026.
| Option | Price (adult) | What you get | Door to door | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Separate tickets: R5 train + rack railway or cable car | €29.80 return (€13.80 FGC 2-journey ticket + €1 card + €15 rack railway or Aeri) | Transport only. Basilica, funicular and museum are extra | About 1 h 30 min each way | Budget visitors and families with children |
| Trans Montserrat | €50 | Metro, train, rack railway or Aeri, Sant Joan funicular, audiovisual space, Basilica and Throne access | About 1 h 30 min each way | Independent visitors who will ride the Sant Joan funicular |
| Tot Montserrat | €71.50 | Trans plus Museum of Montserrat and buffet lunch | Same | People who want the museum and lunch sorted in advance |
| Easy Montserrat coach tour | €56 (child 4–12 €44) | Coach, guide, rack railway up, choir singing subject to the choir’s timetable | 9:00–16:15 (7 h 15 min) | A guided day without managing trains |
| The Montserrat Tour All Included | €76 (child €64) | Coach, guide, rack railway, Basilica, museum, choir (Mon–Fri) | 7 h 15 min, Mon–Fri at 9:00 | Weekday visitors who want the choir built in |
| Car + rack railway | €15 rack railway return; parking at Monistrol Vila is free | Your own schedule | Not timed by us | Groups with a car, early starters |
Trans and Tot cost the same on the Turisme de Barcelona shop and on FGC’s own shop: €50 and €71.50, both checked 22 Oct 2026. The difference is where you collect the card. More on that in the mistakes section below.
How long does the train to Montserrat take?
FGC’s January 2026 R5 timetable (still current on 22 Oct 2026) shows these times:
- Weekdays: R5 trains leave Plaça Espanya at 8:16 and 8:36, then mostly once an hour at :36 past the hour.
- Saturdays, Sundays and holidays: one R5 an hour, at :36 past the hour.
- Train only: the 8:36 arrives at Montserrat-Aeri at 9:37 and Monistrol de Montserrat at 9:41.
- Whole trip: FGC’s Cremallera site puts it at about 90 minutes: 60 minutes on the train plus 20 minutes for the rack railway and the change.
- Via the cable car: our estimate is 1 h 10 min to 1 h 25 min. That is 61 minutes on the train, up to 15 minutes waiting for a cabin, then a 5-minute ride.
Make sure you board an R5. S4 trains terminate at Olesa de Montserrat, which is before both Montserrat stations.
Cremallera (rack railway) or Aeri (cable car)?
| Cremallera (rack railway) | Aeri (cable car) | |
|---|---|---|
| Station on the R5 | Monistrol de Montserrat | Montserrat-Aeri (one stop earlier) |
| Ride | 15 min, 5 km, climbs over 600 m | 5 min, 1,350 m, gradients up to 45% |
| Frequency | Every 20 min from Monistrol Vila. Departures that connect with the train run from Monistrol de Montserrat | Every 15 min. Ran 09:30–19:00 every day in October 2026 |
| Adult return | €15 (child 4–13 €7.50, 65+ €13.50) | €15 (child 4–13 €7.50, 65+ €12.50) |
| Accessibility | Trains, rack railway and stations accessible | Turisme’s tour page says the cable car is not adapted for reduced mobility |
| Parking if driving | Free, 900 spaces at Monistrol Vila | Free at the Aeri station (C-55) |
For most people we’d pick the rack railway. On the October dates we checked, its last ride down was later than the cable car’s. It is also the step-free option, and it arrives in the middle of the sanctuary. The Aeri is quicker and is the more dramatic ride. If you buy Trans or Tot, choose the version when you book: FGC sells the rack railway and Aeri versions as separate products.
What does Tot Montserrat add over Trans?
Tot costs €21.50 more than Trans (€71.50 vs €50, checked 22 Oct 2026). For that you get:
- Museum of Montserrat admission
- Buffet lunch at the Montserrat buffet/cafeteria
Everything else is the same in both:
- return metro to Plaça Espanya and return FGC train
- rack railway or Aeri
- Sant Joan funicular
- Santa Cova funicular “when operating”
- the “Montserrat Behind Closed Doors” audiovisual space
- Basilica and Throne of the Virgin access, subject to capacity and with no priority
Neither ticket includes the boys’ choir, and neither has a child rate: FGC sells both at a single general rate. Children under 4 travel free.
Tot is worth it if you would visit the museum and eat lunch on the mountain anyway. If you plan to hike or bring a picnic, buy Trans. We could not load the museum’s standalone price from the Abbey’s ticket site on 22 Oct 2026, so we can’t say exactly how much Tot saves.
Is Trans Montserrat cheaper than separate tickets?
It depends on one thing: whether you will ride the Sant Joan funicular. These prices are per adult, checked 22 Oct 2026:
| Item | Separate tickets |
|---|---|
| FGC zone-4 “2en1” ticket (two journeys, one card) | €13.80 + €1 card |
| Rack railway or Aeri return | €15 |
| Subtotal: transport only | €29.80 |
| Sant Joan funicular return | €17.50 |
| Metro to and from Plaça Espanya (2 × single) | €5.80 |
| Subtotal: like-for-like with Trans | €53.10 |
| Basilica tourist ticket and audiovisual space | Extra (price not confirmed) |
- If you’ll ride the Sant Joan funicular: Trans at €50 is cheaper than separate tickets and also covers the Basilica.
- If you won’t: separate tickets are about €20 cheaper before the Basilica ticket.
Family example (2 adults, children aged 8 and 11, with the Sant Joan funicular):
- Trans Montserrat: €200.
- Separate tickets: €154.70. That is €45 for the rack railway, €52.50 for the funicular and €57.20 for two FGC “4en1” tickets plus cards. We priced the train at full fare for the children because FGC lists no child single.
Separate tickets save €45.30 before Basilica tickets. Residents of Catalonia, Spain and the EU don’t need a Basilica ticket.
When does the Escolania boys’ choir sing?
Escolania schedule from the official agenda for October 2026:
| Day | When | Booking |
|---|---|---|
| Monday–Friday | 13:00–13:15, Salve and Virolai | Reservation required |
| Monday–Thursday | Also 19:15–19:30, after Vespers | Not stated |
| Saturday | No singing | No |
| Sunday | Conventual Mass at 11:00 (not every Sunday) | Reservation required |
The schedule changes often:
- On 24–25 October 2026 the Schola Cantorum sings instead of the boys.
- The choir is away on holiday from St John’s Day (24 June) to the end of August, after Christmas, and in Easter Week.
- The Abbey notes that the choir is sometimes away from Montserrat.
Check the agenda for your exact date. Non-residents book the choir through combined tickets on the Abbey’s visitor site, montserratvisita.com. Residents book on reserves.abadiamontserrat.cat.
If the choir is the reason you’re going, the 13:00 slot is the one to plan around. The 8:36 R5 gets you up the mountain with time to spare. The 10:36 is the last weekday train that gets you there before 13:00, and that leaves little margin.
Should you take a guided tour or go on your own?
Book a coach tour if:
- you want the choir guaranteed in the plan without booking it yourself. The Montserrat Tour All Included (€76 per adult, €64 per child, checked 23 Oct 2026) runs Monday to Friday and includes the choir, museum and Basilica, subject to the choir’s schedule.
- you’d rather not manage train connections. Both tours leave Estació del Nord (Alí Bei 80) at 9:00 and last 7 h 15 min.
- you want a guide without the full package. Easy Montserrat costs €56 per adult in the official booking calendar (€44 for children aged 4–12, checked 23 Oct 2026), slightly more than Trans. Its page does not list Basilica or museum admission, so check before you book.
Go on your own if:
- you want to hike from the Sant Joan funicular, stay past mid-afternoon or set your own pace
- you’re travelling with children aged 4–13
- you want to visit on a Saturday. The All Included tour runs on weekdays only, and the choir doesn’t sing on Saturdays.
Turisme also lists an afternoon excursion (€59 per adult in its booking calendar, though the page header says €64, checked 23 Oct 2026), but the schedule on its page still shows 2024–25 dates, so confirm the times before you book.
Which option suits you?
| You are… | Buy | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A first-time visitor, independent, planning to ride the Sant Joan funicular | Trans Montserrat (rack railway version) | Cheaper than the same tickets bought separately, and the Basilica is included |
| Keen on the museum and lunch on the mountain | Tot Montserrat | Both are already paid for, for €21.50 more |
| A budget traveller visiting the monastery only | FGC “2en1” ticket + rack railway return | €29.80 plus the Basilica ticket |
| A family with children aged 4–13 | Separate tickets | Trans charges children the full €50 |
| A weekday visitor who wants the choir | Montserrat Tour All Included, or train + a choir ticket from the Abbey site | The 13:00 slot is Monday–Friday only |
| Someone who wants a guide | Easy Montserrat | €56 with coach, guide and rack railway |
| Travelling with a wheelchair or a pushchair | Train + rack railway | Step-free. The Aeri is not adapted |
| Driving | Park at Monistrol Vila (free) + rack railway | Avoids the paid car park at the monastery, where space is limited |
| A cruise passenger | See our cruise port guide first | A 7 h 15 min tour leaves little margin on a short port call |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Collecting your card after the exchange office closes. Vouchers bought on FGC’s shop are swapped for the card at the “Punt d’acollida” in FGC Plaça Espanya station, open 8:00–14:00. Turisme vouchers are exchanged at its tourist offices: Plaça Catalunya is open 8:30–20:30, Plaça Espanya 8:30–14:30. If you want an early train, collect the card the day before.
- Getting off at the wrong station. Get off at Montserrat-Aeri for the cable car and at Monistrol de Montserrat for the rack railway. Monistrol Vila is the rack railway’s car-park stop, not a train station.
- Missing the last ride down. FGC’s timetable finder shows the last rack railway leaving the monastery at 19:15 on most days in late October 2026, 20:15 on 25–26 October, 18:15 on most November weekdays and on Saturday 14 November, and 19:15 on Sunday 15 November (checked 23 Oct 2026). Rack railways leaving at quarter past the hour are the ones that connect with the R5. The last train from Monistrol to Barcelona is at 22:41, so the ride down is what usually limits your day.
- Treating weekends like weekdays. On weekends the R5 runs only once an hour, so missing a train costs you an hour, and the choir doesn’t sing on Saturdays. Turisme’s Tot Montserrat page advises booking ahead in high season.
- Expecting the choir or the Santa Cova funicular with Trans. Neither is included right now. The choir is excluded from Trans and Tot, and the Santa Cova funicular was out of service on 22 Oct 2026. The Abbey says the Santa Cova (Holy Cave) itself opens 10:30–17:00 and can be reached on foot.
- Dressing for the beach. Turisme’s tour pages state that shorts, sandals and strappy tops are not allowed in the monastery.

How we checked this page
On 22 October 2026 we checked these sources:
- Turisme de Barcelona shop: the Trans Montserrat, Tot Montserrat, Easy Montserrat, Montserrat Tour All Included and afternoon excursion product pages.
- FGC shop (vol.cremallerademontserrat.cat): Trans, Tot, rack railway, Sant Joan and Santa Cova funicular pages, including the price for each age group.
- FGC timetables: the January 2026 R5 timetable PDF and the timetable finder on cremallerademontserrat.cat, run for 22, 24 and 25 October and for 10 and 14 November 2026.
- FGC fares: the fares page and the Monistrol de Montserrat station page (zone 4).
- Aeri de Montserrat: the fares page and its October 2026 calendar.
- Escolania de Montserrat: the October 2026 agenda.
- Abadia de Montserrat: its timetables page.
- Montserrat Visita: the FAQ and the how-to-get-there pages.
What we could not confirm:
- Basilica and museum prices. The Abbey’s ticket site (tickets.montserratvisita.com) only loads with JavaScript, so we couldn’t read the standalone Basilica, museum or choir ticket prices.
- Driving times and the monastery car park fee. We haven’t verified driving times, and the Abbey site doesn’t state the car park rate.
- GetYourGuide tours. Their pages blocked our checks, so we don’t list their prices.
Not first-hand yet: nobody from our team has made this trip for this page. The journey times above come from operator timetables, not our own timings. There are no photos of our own yet.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get from Barcelona to Montserrat by train?
Take FGC line R5 (towards Manresa) from Plaça Espanya. Get off at Montserrat-Aeri for the cable car or at Monistrol de Montserrat for the rack railway. FGC puts the whole trip at about 1 hour 30 minutes each way.
Does Trans Montserrat include the Escolania boys' choir?
No. The FGC shop says in capitals that Trans and Tot Montserrat do not include access to the boys' choir (checked 22 Oct 2026). The choir sings Monday to Friday at 13:00, and you need to reserve. There is no singing on Saturdays.
What time is the last train back from Montserrat?
The last connection is set by the rack railway down, not the train. FGC's timetable finder shows the last rack railway leaving the monastery at 19:15 on most days in late October 2026 (20:15 on 25 and 26 October) and at 18:15 on most weekdays in November (checked 23 Oct 2026). The 19:15 gets you into Plaça Espanya at 20:45.
Cable car or rack railway: which is better?
The Aeri cable car takes 5 minutes and leaves every 15 minutes. The rack railway takes 15 minutes and is accessible for people with reduced mobility. Both cost €15 return for an adult (checked 22 Oct 2026), and Trans Montserrat comes in either version.
Do I need a ticket to enter the Basilica of Montserrat?
If you are not resident in Catalonia, Spain or the EU, yes. The Abbey's visitor site says a tourist ticket is needed for the Atrium, Basilica and Chapel. People attending services and hotel guests don't need one. Trans and Tot Montserrat include Basilica access, subject to capacity.
Is the Santa Cova funicular running?
Not on 22 Oct 2026. FGC's shop lists it as temporarily out of service with no reopening date. Trans and Tot only include it 'when operating'.
