Barcelona Tourist Tax 2026–2027: How Much You Pay per Night (and Who Is Exempt)

By BCN Clear Updated 23 Oct 2026 Facts checked 23 Oct 2026
Short answer

Until 31 March 2027 every guest aged 17 or over pays €6.00 to €12.00 per night in Barcelona city, depending on where they sleep: €8.40 in a 4-star hotel, €9.50 in a licensed holiday flat. Only the first seven nights in the same place are taxed, children aged 16 or under are exempt, and the city part rises by at least €1 on 1 April 2027 and again on 1 April 2028.

Rates valid 1 Apr 2026 to 31 Mar 2027 (checked 23 Oct 2026). From 1 April 2027 the Barcelona surcharge rises to €6 and from 1 April 2028 to €7, for every type of accommodation.

How much is the Barcelona tourist tax per night?

The bill has two parts: the Catalan tax on stays in tourist accommodation, managed by the Catalan Tax Agency (ATC), at its Barcelona city rate, and a surcharge added by Barcelona City Council. Together they are what hotels, booking sites and travellers call the Barcelona city tax or tourist tax. These are the official rates per guest aged 17 or over, valid from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027 (checked 22 Oct 2026):

Where you sleepCatalan taxCity surchargeTotal per adult per night
5-star hotel, grand luxury, luxury campsite or equivalent€7.00€5.00€12.00
4-star or 4-star superior hotel, or equivalent€3.40€5.00€8.40
Licensed tourist flat (HUT, the typical Airbnb-style rental)€4.50€5.00€9.50
Other hotels and establishments (3 stars and below, hostals, pensions, other campsites)€2.00€5.00€7.00
Youth hostel (alberg de joventut)€1.00€5.00€6.00

Three rules decide what you actually pay:

The law counts “stay units”, which it defines as days or parts of a day of a continuous stay. The City Council describes the surcharge as an amount per night, and the invoice must state how many units you are charged for, so check that line if the total looks off.

On the youth hostel rate: the City Council says the €1.00 Catalan rate applies to hostels in the Generalitat’s youth hostel register. A hostel outside that register is taxed in another category, so the €6.00 total is not guaranteed for every backpacker hostel.

Who is exempt from the tourist tax?

The ATC lists four exemptions:

ExemptionWhat the accommodation can ask for
People aged 16 or underPassport, ID card, family book or similar. For children under 14, a signed statement from a parent, guardian or accompanying adult is also accepted
Stays paid for by a social programme of a public administration in an EU countryThe booking or invoice showing the programme
Stays caused by force majeure in Catalonia (for example a natural disaster)A signed statement and, unless the event is public knowledge, a document from the authorities
Stays for health reasons to receive care covered by the Catalan public health system, including companionsA signed statement plus a certificate or medical report from the health centre

What is not exempt: business trips. The ATC’s FAQ says everyone staying in tourist accommodation pays, “even if they are not staying as tourists”. Students, conference delegates and people visiting family who sleep in a hotel or holiday flat pay the same rates. Day trippers who do not use any tourist accommodation do not pay it.

Is the tax included in the price you book?

Sometimes, and you will not always know until you look at the price breakdown. The legal position, from the ATC:

In practice that means three possible situations. Your booking total already includes the tax, the site lists it as “pay at the property”, or the hotel or host adds it at check-in. All three are legal. What matters is not paying it twice, so compare the tax line on your booking confirmation with the invoice you get when you check out.

Airbnb and holiday flats. Airbnb publishes a list of countries where it collects and pays tourist taxes for hosts. On 22 October 2026 that list included France, Germany, Italy, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovakia and Switzerland, but not Spain. So in Barcelona the host is responsible for charging the €9.50 per adult per night, either through the listing price or separately. A licensed flat must have a Catalan tourism register number. If a host offers to “skip the tax”, treat it as a warning sign about the licence. Our where to stay guide explains how to check a flat’s licence with the City Council’s address lookup before you pay.

Booking early before a rate change. If you book before a new rate starts and pay the full price of the stay plus the tax at that moment, the rate in force on the booking date applies. If you pay later, at the hotel, the rate in force when your stay starts applies.

How much will the tourist tax be from April 2027 and April 2028?

The Barcelona surcharge is already scheduled to rise twice. The Catalan part for Barcelona city has no scheduled change: the ATC publishes it for 2026–27 only, and the Association of Catalan Municipalities’ summary of Law 2/2026 lists a second phase only for the rest of Catalonia. The totals below assume the Catalan part stays the same. That is our projection, not an official table.

Where you sleepUntil 31 Mar 20271 Apr 2027 – 31 Mar 20281 Apr 2028 – 31 Mar 2029
5-star hotel€12.00€13.00€14.00
4-star hotel€8.40€9.40*€10.40
Licensed tourist flat€9.50€10.50€11.50
Other hotels and establishments€7.00€8.00€9.00
Youth hostel€6.00€7.00€8.00
Cruise call, more than 12 hours€9.00€10.00€11.00
Cruise call, 12 hours or less€11.00€12.00€13.00

*The City Council’s surcharge ordinance (BOPB, 2 February 2026) and the Catalan version of the ATC’s rate table both list a €6.00 surcharge for 4-star hotels in 2027–28, which makes the total €9.40. The Spanish version of the same ATC page still showed €6.40 when we checked on 23 October 2026.

After March 2029. The ordinance sets the surcharge at €8.00 for every category once its transition period ends on 31 March 2029, and the City Council’s March 2026 announcement describes the surcharge rising by one euro a year until 2029, up to a maximum of €8 per night. On that basis a 4-star hotel would cost €11.40 per adult per night, if the Catalan part does not change.

Pending, not in force: a much higher charge for short cruise calls. On 25 September 2026 the full City Council provisionally approved a change to the surcharge ordinance for cruise calls of 12 hours or less: €12 from 1 April 2027, €16 from April 2028, €20 from April 2029 and €24 from April 2030 (BOPB, 30 September 2026). It is open for public comment until 12 November 2026 and becomes final only after any objections are resolved. On 23 October 2026 it was not final and did not appear in the ATC’s rate table, so it is not in our table or in the calculator.

Do cruise passengers pay the tourist tax?

Only if Barcelona is a port of call. The ATC treats a cruise ship moored or anchored in a Catalan port as a taxable stay. The tax is due when the ship calls at Barcelona for passengers who are in transit. If you start your cruise in Barcelona, or finish it there, you do not pay it for the cruise.

Time the ship is in portCatalan taxCity surchargeTotal per person
12 hours or less€6.00€5.00€11.00
More than 12 hours€4.00€5.00€9.00

The rates are per person per day or part of a day in port, valid until 31 March 2027. Passengers aged 16 or under are exempt, as on land. You do not pay at the quay: the cruise line is the “establishment” and charges it, so look for it on your cruise invoice or onboard account.

If you sleep in a Barcelona hotel the night before boarding or after leaving the ship, that night is taxed at the hotel rate in the first table. Our cruise port guide covers terminals, the shuttle and taxis.

Two details change the totals more than people expect:

Calculate your tourist tax

The calculator at the top of this page works out the total for your group from the official 2026–27 rates: choose the type of accommodation, enter the guests aged 17 or over, the children and the nights, and it applies the seven-night cap.

Is the tax lower if you stay outside Barcelona?

Yes, much lower, but not zero. Outside Barcelona city the Catalan rates are lower, and from 1 October 2026 several towns around Barcelona add their own surcharge. L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, Sant Cugat del Vallès, Sabadell and El Prat de Llobregat (where the airport is) apply the same amounts (checked 22 Oct 2026):

Where you sleep1 Oct 2026 – 31 Mar 2027From 1 Apr 2027
5-star hotel€4.50 + €4.00 = €8.50€6.00 + €4.00 = €10.00
4-star hotel€1.80 + €1.80 = €3.60€2.40 + €2.40 = €4.80
Licensed tourist flat€1.75 + €1.75 = €3.50€2.50 + €2.50 = €5.00
Other hotels and establishments€0.90 + €0.90 = €1.80€1.20 + €1.20 = €2.40
Youth hostel€0.80 + €0.80 = €1.60€1.00 + €1.00 = €2.00

The first figure is the Catalan rate for the rest of Catalonia, the second the town surcharge. Castelldefels, Esplugues de Llobregat and Sant Just Desvern have different surcharges, listed on the ATC’s rate page.

In a 4-star hotel in L’Hospitalet each adult pays €4.80 a night less than in Barcelona, so a couple saves €38.40 over four nights. That is real money, but a return metro or train trip into the centre each day costs time and fares too. Stay outside the city for the hotel price or for an early flight, not for the tax alone. Our airport to city guide compares the transport options.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the tourist tax in Barcelona per night?

From 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027 it is €12.00 per adult per night in a 5-star hotel, €8.40 in a 4-star hotel, €9.50 in a licensed tourist flat, €7.00 in other hotels and establishments and €6.00 in a youth hostel. Each figure is the Catalan tax plus the €5.00 Barcelona City Council surcharge.

Do children pay the tourist tax in Barcelona?

No. Anyone aged 16 or under is exempt. The accommodation can ask for proof of age, such as a passport or ID card; for children under 14 a signed statement from a parent or accompanying adult is also accepted.

Is the Barcelona tourist tax included in the booking price?

Not always. The accommodation is the one legally responsible for charging it and must show it as a separate line on your invoice. Some booking sites show it as a tax to pay at the property, so check the price breakdown before you pay.

Does Airbnb collect the Barcelona tourist tax?

Airbnb's own list of places where it collects and pays tourist taxes did not include Spain when we checked on 22 October 2026. The host is responsible for charging it, at €9.50 per adult per night in a licensed tourist flat until 31 March 2027.

Do cruise passengers pay the Barcelona tourist tax?

Only passengers in transit, whose ship calls at Barcelona during the cruise. They pay €11.00 per person if the ship stays 12 hours or less and €9.00 if it stays longer. Passengers who start or end their cruise in Barcelona do not pay it for the cruise, and the cruise line charges it, not the port.

Is the Barcelona tourist tax going up in 2027?

Yes. The City Council surcharge goes from €5.00 to €6.00 on 1 April 2027 and to €7.00 on 1 April 2028, for every type of accommodation (the Spanish version of the tax agency's table still showed €6.40 for 4-star hotels in 2027–28 on 23 October 2026). A bigger rise for short cruise calls was provisionally approved on 25 September 2026 but was not final on 23 October 2026.
