Barcelona Airport to the City Centre: Aerobús, Metro, Train or Taxi?
We earn a commission if you book through some links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It never decides what we recommend. How we make money
If you are staying in the centre, take the Aerobús: €7.75 one way, 24 hours a day from both terminals, about 35 minutes to Plaça Catalunya. If you are buying a Hola Barcelona card anyway, use its included airport metro trip. From T2 to Sants or Passeig de Gràcia, the R2 Nord train is cheapest at €1.30 a journey with a T-casual. Three or four people with luggage should take a taxi: about €28–40 on the meter.

Quick answer: what is the best way from Barcelona airport into the city?
| If you are… | Take | Cost (checked 22 Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Staying near Plaça Catalunya, Plaça Universitat or Plaça Espanya | Aerobús (A1 from T1, A2 from T2) | €7.75 one way, €13.30 return |
| Buying a Hola Barcelona card for your stay anyway | Metro L9 Sud with the card | Included: one airport trip each way |
| Landing at T2 and going to Sants, Passeig de Gràcia or El Clot | R2 Nord train | €1.30 a journey with a T-casual (€13 for 10) |
| Three or four people with suitcases | Taxi from the rank | About €28–40 per car on the meter (our calculation) |
| Arriving between about 1 am and 5 am | Aerobús (24 h) or taxi | €7.75 / taxi at the night rate |
The airport has two terminals, T1 and T2, and they are far apart. Your boarding pass or airline app tells you which one you will land at. The Aerobús and the metro serve both. The train only leaves from T2.
T1 or T2: what changes?
| Terminal 1 | Terminal 2 (T2A, T2B, T2C) | |
|---|---|---|
| Aerobús | Line A1, from T1 Level 0 (arrivals) | Line A2, from T2B and T2C |
| Metro L9 Sud | Aeroport T1 station, floor 0 | Aeroport T2 station, floor 0 |
| R2 Nord train | No: take the shuttle to T2 first | Yes |
| Bus 46 | Yes | Yes |
| Night bus | N17 and N18 | N18 only |
| Taxi rank | Floor 0, arrivals | Opposite arrivals at T2A, T2B and T2C |
Aena runs a free shuttle between terminals 24 hours a day. It leaves every 5 minutes from 08:00 to 20:00, every 7 minutes early morning and evening, and every 10 minutes between midnight and 05:00. Aena gives the ride as 10 minutes from T1 to T2B/C and 14 minutes from T2 to T1.
All the options compared: time and price
| Option | Price per person (checked 22 Oct 2026) | Time to the centre | Hours | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aerobús A1/A2 | €7.75 single, €13.30 return | 30–35 min on board (operator), plus up to 5–10 min wait by day | 24 h, every 5–20 min | Most first-time visitors staying centrally |
| Metro L9 Sud + one change | €5.90 Airport ticket; included in Hola card, T-dia, T-usual | TMB says 32 min on L9; allow 45–60 min to Plaça Catalunya with the change (our estimate) | Metro hours (see night section) | Hola card holders; Sagrada Família, Sants, Camp Nou area |
| R2 Nord train (T2 only) | €1.30 with a T-casual | About 25 min to Sants, 30 to Passeig de Gràcia (our reading of the timetable), plus up to 30 min wait | About every 30 min; last airport departure listed 23:38 | Sants, Passeig de Gràcia, Eixample, budget trips |
| Bus 46 | Integrated tickets (T-casual) | Slowest; stops in El Prat and L’Hospitalet. Not timed by us | About 05:00–24:00 | Plaça Espanya on a tight budget |
| Night bus N17 / N18 | Integrated tickets, Hola card | Not timed by us | About 00:00–05:00, every 20–30 min | Late arrivals on a budget |
| Taxi | €28–40 per car to central areas (our calculation); minimum €21 | 20–30 min without traffic (our estimate) | 24 h | Groups of 3–4, heavy luggage, reduced mobility |
| Uber, Cabify, Bolt | Quoted in the app | Similar to taxi | 24 h | People who prefer an agreed price |
The cost for a group. For four people, the Aerobús costs 4 × €7.75 = €31 one way, and the metro 4 × €5.90 = €23.60. A taxi to Plaça Catalunya costs about €28–36 for the whole car. For three or more people with suitcases, the taxi costs about the same and takes you to the door.
Which tickets are valid at the airport?
The airport metro stations are the trap. Several tickets that work everywhere else in the city do not open the gates at Aeroport T1 and T2.
| Ticket | Price (checked 22 Oct 2026) | Metro L9 Sud airport stations | R2 Nord train | Bus 46 / night buses | Aerobús |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Airport ticket (TMB) | €5.90, one metro journey | Yes | No | No | No |
| Single ticket | €2.90 | No | No | – | No |
| T-casual (10 journeys, zone 1) | €13 (+€1 if loaded on a new cardboard card) | No | Yes | Yes | No |
| T-dia (24 h) | From €12 | One journey to and one from the airport | Yes | Yes | No |
| Hola Barcelona Travel Card | From €17.76 for 48 h online in the Turisme shop; TMB lists it from €12.50 (24 h) | One trip each way | Not stated (see below) | Yes (incl. NitBus) | No |
| Barcelona Card (transport version) | From €35.10 for 48 h online | Yes | Yes | Not night buses | No |
| Aerobús ticket | €7.75 / €13.30 | No | No | No | Yes |
Notes on the table:
- T-casual. TMB and ATM both say it is not valid at the Aeroport T1 and T2 metro stations. ATM says all integrated tickets are valid to and from the airport on Rodalies trains and integrated buses. It is for one person at a time, and you cannot share it with your travel companion on the same trip.
- Stuck at the gate. TMB says that if you reach Aeroport T1 or T2 with a ticket that is not valid there, you must buy the Airport ticket at the station to get out.
- Hola card and the train. TMB lists “Rodalies de Catalunya, zone 1” among the card’s operators. Neither TMB nor the card’s site says outright whether that covers the airport train station, so we treat the metro as the safe choice with this card.
- Hola card value. The card includes one airport metro trip each way, worth 2 × €5.90 = €11.80 at the Airport ticket price. If you are buying the card anyway, taking the Aerobús as well costs you €7.75 or €13.30 extra, for a more direct ride. Our Hola Barcelona card guide works out when the card pays off, and the Barcelona Card guide covers the museum pass that includes the airport metro and train.
How much is a taxi from Barcelona airport to the city?
There is no fixed fare between the airport and the city centre. The only fixed airport fare is €46 to and from the Moll Adossat cruise terminals. Everything else goes on the meter, using the AMB 2026 tariff:
- T-1 (working days 08:00–20:00): €2.80 flag fall plus €1.35 per km.
- T-2 (working days 20:00–08:00, Saturdays and public holidays): €2.80 plus €1.66 per km.
- Airport supplement: €4.60. Minimum fare from the airport: €21, all supplements included.
- 5–8 passengers: €4.60 supplement. Waiting time and slow traffic: €27.75 an hour, so ten minutes stuck in traffic adds about €4.60.
Our estimates, using road distances from OpenStreetMap routing (15–20 km depending on terminal and destination). These are our own arithmetic, not quotes, and they exclude traffic waiting time:
| Destination | Weekday daytime (T-1) | Nights, Saturdays, holidays (T-2) |
|---|---|---|
| Plaça Catalunya | €28–31 | €33–36 |
| Sagrada Família | €31–34 | €37–40 |
| Barcelona-Sants station | €28–30 | €32–35 |
| Bottom of La Rambla (Drassanes) | €28–31 | €33–36 |
| Cruise terminals, Moll Adossat | €46 fixed, all supplements included | €46 fixed |
The lower figure is from T2, the higher from T1, which is further out. Aena says the only official Barcelona taxi is black and yellow. Take one from the marked rank at arrivals, not from someone who approaches you inside the terminal.
Uber, Cabify and Bolt. Aena lists pick-up points for all three: Uber on T1 floors 2 and 0 and the T2A/T2B express car parks; Cabify on floor 0 at T1, T2A, T2B and T2C; Bolt on floor 0 at T1 and in the T2 express car park. No official prices are published. The app shows the price before you book. Licensed taxis can also be booked through approved apps at a closed price agreed in advance (the AMB’s T-3 fare), with the meter at zero.
Which route is best for where you are staying?
| You are going to | Best public transport | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Plaça Catalunya, Gothic Quarter, Raval, La Rambla | Aerobús to Plaça Catalunya (last stop) | No changes. Metro L1 and L3 from there |
| Sagrada Família | Metro L9 Sud → change at Collblanc to L5 (direct to Sagrada Família), or Aerobús to Plaça Universitat → L2 (direct) | The L5 route is one change and is covered by the Hola card; the L2 route suits Aerobús users |
| Barcelona-Sants station | From T2: R2 Nord direct. From T1: metro L9 → Collblanc → L5 | The Aerobús does not stop at Sants |
| Passeig de Gràcia, Eixample | From T2: R2 Nord to Passeig de Gràcia. Otherwise Aerobús to Plaça Catalunya and walk | Direct train from T2 |
| Plaça Espanya, Fira, Montjuïc | Aerobús (first city stop is Plaça Espanya) or bus 46 | Both end or stop at Plaça Espanya |
| Cruise terminals (Moll Adossat) | Taxi, €46 fixed | See our cruise port guide |
| Port Vell, bottom of La Rambla | Metro L9 → Zona Universitària → L3 to Drassanes, or Aerobús to Plaça Catalunya → L3 | L3 runs direct from Zona Universitària through Sants and Catalunya to Drassanes |
Interchanges are from TMB’s L9 Sud page and line diagrams. If you haven’t booked a place to stay yet, our where to stay guide compares areas by how easy they are to reach from the airport.
Step by step: the three main routes
Aerobús. Follow the Aerobús signs at arrivals: Level 0 at T1, T2B or T2C at Terminal 2. Buy online, at the machines or from staff at the stop, or on the bus itself. The operator accepts cash (maximum change €20) and cards. Scan the QR code when you board. City stops are Plaça Espanya, Gran Via – Borrell, Plaça Universitat and Plaça Catalunya. Full details, including the return ticket, are in our Aerobús guide.
Metro L9 Sud. Follow the metro signs to the Aeroport T1 or Aeroport T2 station (floor 0). Buy the €5.90 Airport ticket at the machine, or validate your Hola card, T-dia or T-usual. TMB gives a train every 7 minutes. Change at Torrassa (L1 to Plaça Catalunya), Collblanc (L5 to Sants and Sagrada Família) or Zona Universitària (L3 to Sants, Plaça Espanya, Catalunya and Drassanes). The Airport ticket is valid until you leave the metro, so a change of line is included.
R2 Nord train. From T2, follow the train signs. If you landed at T1, take the free shuttle to T2 first, which adds 10 minutes plus the wait. The Rodalies timetable (updated 1 September 2026) shows departures at :08 and :38 past the hour. Validate a T-casual or other integrated ticket at the gate. Get off at Barcelona-Sants, Passeig de Gràcia or El Clot-Aragó. Rodalies also sells its own single tickets, but its fares page did not show clearly current 2026 prices when we checked, so we don’t quote one.
Arriving late at night: what still runs?
| Time you land | What runs |
|---|---|
| Before about 23:00 | Everything: Aerobús, metro, train (last listed airport departure 23:38), bus 46 |
| 23:00 to midnight | Aerobús, metro, last trains, bus 46 until about midnight |
| Midnight to 05:00, Sunday–Thursday nights | Aerobús (A1 every 10–20 min, A2 every 20 min), N17/N18 night buses, taxis |
| Friday night and eves of holidays | As above, plus the metro until 02:00 |
| Saturday night | As above, plus the metro all night |
Metro hours are TMB’s. Night-bus hours and frequency (about 00:00–05:00, every 20–30 minutes) are ATM’s figures. The N17 leaves from T1 only, and the N18 serves T1 and T2. Both end at Plaça Catalunya. Taxi meters switch to the T-2 rate from 20:00, so a late-night taxi to the centre costs roughly €33–36 (our calculation).
Common mistakes
- Taking the A1 when you are at T2, or the other way round. A1 is Terminal 1, A2 is Terminal 2. Check your airline’s terminal before you board.
- Using a T-casual on the airport metro. It is not valid at the airport stations, and you will have to buy the €5.90 Airport ticket to exit. Use the T-casual on the train or bus 46 instead.
- Looking for the train at T1. It only leaves from T2.
- Expecting the Aerobús to stop at Sants. It doesn’t; the operator confirms it doesn’t stop at Sants or Barcelona Nord.
- Searching for the Aerobús website and landing on aerobusbcn.com. When we checked on 22 Oct 2026, that domain showed unrelated content. The operator’s site is aerobusbarcelona.es.
- Accepting a ride from someone in the arrivals hall. Official taxis are black and yellow and wait at the marked ranks. Ride-hail drivers meet you at the pick-up points listed in the app.
- Buying two Aerobús singles when you know you’ll come back. The return costs €13.30, against €15.50 for two singles. It is valid for 90 days, and the return leg can be from either terminal.
How we checked this page
- Sources consulted on 22 Oct 2026: Aerobús operator site (lines and stops for A1 and A2 in both directions, rates, FAQs); Turisme de Barcelona shop (Aerobús, Hola card, Barcelona Card); TMB (fares page, Airport ticket, T-dia, metro-to-airport page, Hola card page, operating hours, line diagrams); ATM (airport-to-city page, T-casual); Rodalies de Catalunya (R2 Nord line page and the R2 timetable PDF updated 1 Sep 2026); Aena (bus, taxi, vehicles for hire, metro and free inter-terminal shuttle pages); AMB (2026 taxi tariffs, N17 and N18 line pages). Road distances for the taxi estimates came from the OSRM router on OpenStreetMap data.
- Our own work: the comparison tables, the ticket-validity matrix, the taxi fare estimates calculated from the official tariff, the group cost comparison and the route-by-destination table.
- Not first-hand yet: nobody from our team has made these journeys for this page. All door-to-door times marked as estimates are ours and not measured. We have no photos of the stops, machines or signs.
- What we could not confirm: a current 2026 Rodalies-only single fare from the airport; whether the Hola card covers the airport train station; exact frequencies and timetables of bus 46 and the N17/N18 night buses; the first train of the day from the airport. Aena lists N17 and N18 as the airport night buses; older guides that send you to an “N16” for T2 are out of date. ATM’s page still shows an older Aerobús fare (€7.45); the operator sells at €7.75.
Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest way from Barcelona airport to the city centre?
The R2 Nord train from Terminal 2 with a T-casual: €13 for 10 journeys, so €1.30 a trip (checked 22 Oct 2026). Bus 46 to Plaça Espanya also takes the T-casual. The metro does not: at the airport stations you need the €5.90 Airport ticket or a pass that includes the airport.
How much is a taxi from Barcelona airport to the city centre?
There is no fixed fare to the centre. On the 2026 AMB tariff, our calculation gives about €28–31 to Plaça Catalunya on a weekday daytime and €33–36 at night or at weekends, including the €4.60 airport supplement. The minimum fare from the airport is €21. The only fixed fare is €46 to the cruise terminals.
Can I use a T-casual on the metro from Barcelona airport?
No. TMB and ATM both say the T-casual, the single ticket, the T-grup and the T-familiar are not valid at the Aeroport T1 and T2 metro stations. If you arrive there with one of them, you have to buy the €5.90 Airport ticket to get out. The T-casual is valid on the R2 Nord train and on the airport buses.
Does the Hola Barcelona Travel Card include the airport?
Yes, for the metro. TMB says the card includes one outbound and one return metro journey between the airport and the city. It does not include the Aerobús unless you buy the operator's combined ticket.
Is there a train from Barcelona airport to the city?
Yes, the Rodalies R2 Nord, from Terminal 2 only. It runs about every 30 minutes to Barcelona-Sants, Passeig de Gràcia and El Clot-Aragó. From Terminal 1, take the free 24-hour shuttle to T2 first.
How do I get from Barcelona airport to the city late at night?
The Aerobús runs all night, every 20 minutes in the small hours. The N17 night bus (from T1) and the N18 (from T1 and T2) run to Plaça Catalunya from about midnight to 5 am. Metro times depend on the day: until midnight Sunday to Thursday, until 2 am on Fridays, and all night on Saturdays.
